Rock and Roll Bans Art Work, Gets Brownie Points for Promoting Morality
Kimmy McCann - Zone 9 Art

LOS ANGELES, CA--Downtown artist and Zone 9 Art organizer, Kimmy McCann, recently caused an uproar in the halls of NRG Recording Studios after a hanging an art show addressing the words, “Naked” vs. “Nude”. The show which took one month to organize, and three hours to hang, was abruptly removed within the first five hours after a prominent music industry producer threatened to take his business and bands elsewhere if the artwork was not taken down immediately. NRG Recording Studios, (Lit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Drowning Pool, No Doubt, Beck, Sugar Ray, and Korn) accepted the invitation to hang a six week show called, “Trippy Porn” which featured the collage artwork of porn-deconstructionalists Grinda, Jean-Paul Garnier, and L. Croskey (both of whom are organizers for Los Angeles’ underground art scene, Cannibal Flower). McCann, who successfully produced three well attended art events last summer featuring multi-forms of underground artist talents, likes to present issues as an antithesis within our society. One show, held last fourth of July and featured cardboard installations on downtown’s notorious Skid Row, and was called, “America the Beautiful: A Drive-By Show.” “My idea for Spring was a show about deconstructing pornography. I got the idea after being approached by Grinda, a local artist, who showed me collages that used pornography as an impetus for the rest of the artwork. When talking to members of Cannibal Flower, I learned that both Jean-Paul Garnier and L. Croskey had also been creating work along the same line. I found the idea valid and intriguing. I approached NRG because I felt that the artwork had a fresh originality, and I thought that a business, in which the rock and roll community serviced, would be a great avenue to have a show that would not otherwise get exposure.” A show of this original show, which will be entitled, “Trippy Porn: The Censored Show”, will hang in Kimmy McCann’s Zone 9/art studio on Sunday, April 21, 2001 and will be open to a public reception from 11:00-4:00 pm. The studio is located at 417 S. Wall Street, Studio #407, in the downtown section of Los Angeles.
